Ortiz and Panier

They sat a conference table, looking much the same as last year, though Panier had apparently been promoted. She gestured to a chair on the other side of the table. Three glasses of water were positioned symmetrically, two on one side and one on the other.

“Vous avez de gros problèmes maintenant,” Panier said. Then she smiled, and to my relief Ortiz did too. But he hadn’t looked up from his notebook.

“Your wife becomes ill with cholera on her second day here and on the third day someone tries to blow up the boat you and your friends are taking to the island.”

So they did believe us. He spoke calmly, with authority. “What do you think is happening?”

“I don’t know.” Except now I was beginning to have an idea. If Miles had been murdered... was the killer back? But why?

“We are going to interview everyone on that boat, and will stay in Samana for a few days,” Ortiz continued. “This is a disturbing situation and we want to get to the bottom of it. And I want to know how you are involved.” Something buzzed unnaturally in his phone. He picked it up.

“That’s a new phone,” he said with a frown. But he wasn’t distracted long. The questions began.

I answered them honestly until he started to ask about Miles. And if he was like most cops he was pretty good at spotting lies.

The truth mostly worked; I told them about my Christmas enquiries and even my detective daughter visiting his son. The official sources had no opinion on his death; an accident as suspected.

The sins of omission were beginning to pile up. I now knew that Miles was working undercover and the murder weapon remained on the beach. What did I do with that?

If I dug the damn thing up how would it look? Never mind, I knew the answer; it would look like I put it there. Goddam it.

“Mister Allard?” Crap, I drifted out for a sec.

“Sorry, it’s been a long week.” They nodded.

“So you have nothing more to add about the death of Doug Miles.”

“No.” Ortiz’s phone made another odd buzz. He looked again, his frustration showing.

“This was expensive,” he said to no one in particular, still looking at the phone. He finally looked up and said, “Thank you Mister Allard. You will be on the property of the resort?”

“Yes, we booked for 14 days; we have almost a week left.”
